Happy holidays, Shona Our fall Urban Sustainability Skills course finished up this past week, and it was a great session! The course is an interesting mix of discussions, presentations, and hands-on activities. During the 8 weeks, we made our own applesauce, canned pickles, grew sprouts, started seedlings, and made our own cleaning products. If you missed out this semester, don't worry - classes will start again on January 26th! The 8 week Urban Sustainability Skills course will run for 2 hours each Monday at Sustainable Concordia (2nd floor of 2090 Mackay, Montreal). Registration will run until January 19th. See the workshops page for more details. "PGSS event looks at relationship between capitalism and sustainability" in the McGill Daily11/3/2014 Did you miss our Green Drinks event on how businesses can really be sustainable? Check out the coverage in the McGill Daily: On October 21, the Post-Graduate Students’ Society (PGSS) environment committee held a talk titled “Green Capitalism: Can businesses really be sustainable?” as part of a monthly event series put on in collaboration with Green Drinks Montreal, an organization that hosts environmental discussions. As part of the Green Drinks series put on by the SSMU and PGGS environment committees, Shona Watt from TinyHomestead will be leading a discussion on sustainability in business on October 21st from 5-7pm in the Thomson House Basement (McGill University).
Despite the pressing need to tackle climate change, few governments have committed to serious action necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In many ways, businesses have the potential to lead the world to a more responsible future. However, most businesses rely on a capitalist model, which values the pursuit of profits over the exploitation of nature and vulnerable communities. Can companies really embody the solutions necessary for our well-being, or is capitalism fundamentally at odds with true sustainability? This presentation and discussion will be led by Shona Watt of TinyHomestead.ca, a small business dedicated to teaching and implementing urban sustainability. All welcome! Light refreshments provided. Email environment.pgss@mail.mcgill.ca for more information. |
